| Apart from being unsightly, foot corns may also cause pain and discomfort. From the youth level to the professional ranks, go to an outdoor game and you're likely to see the players wearing cleats on their feet. Pain in the big toe going into the ball of the foot under the big toe can be a sign of flexor hallucis longus muscle dysfunction. Pain in the ball of your foot that manifests or worsens after exercise is generally referred to as metatarsalgia. Ball of the foot pain is a common complaint but it is important to know which of the many injuries and conditions could be causing your foot pain. Morton's Neuroma - Pinching of a nerve as it passes between the metatarsal heads, causing pain and sometimes numbness or tingling. Turf Toe - a sprain to the ligaments supporting the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint (between the big toe and 1st metatarsal). Metatarsal Stress Fractures - the 2nd metatarsal is most frequently fractured which can cause pain in the ball of the foot. Sesamoid injuries - There are 2 sesamoid bones underneath the joint of the big toe and the 1st metatarsal. There is pain on weight bearing, and sufferers will often compensate by walking on the outside of the foot. This is common in the joint joining the big toe to the foot. They are simply hard beads or plugs of cholesterol and they have no surrounding callous. They appear only on the sole of the foot regardless of pressure from a bony part of the foot and are frequently found in non-weight-bearing areas. The toe box should be high and wide enough so as to not squash or squeeze the toes. Nerve disease or neuropathy (loss of sensation), which impairs sensation to the feet. Fortunately, there is treatment for joint pain as well, and it usually is very effective. Doctors will tell you to wear shoes that have thick soles and rounded heels. This will greatly alleviate the pain from your foot and allow you to walk and posture better. But as with nerve damage, doctors may be forced to turn to surgery as a last result if the other treatments they give you don't work. Pain in the bones of your foot can also be cause in developing metatarsalgia as well. Pain in the bone usually results from suffering injuries directly to your foot, such as a bone fracture or damaging the tissues surrounding the bone. As a result, pain in the bone can develop more in people who run or wear high heeled shoes the most. Doctors will perform an x-ray of your foot to confirm whether or not the pain is resulting from bone pain or injury. However, by what you say, it sounds like your boot's the wrong size in the too large or too wide aspect, since it seems like you are having to be placing too much "mushy stuff" between the boot sole and the bottom of your foot in order to get the tight enough fit that you want. This excess mushiness below the ball can Bone Tumors in the Foot cause a dome effect that forces the ball of the foot to bend down too much on both sides and causes pain after a while. Although I should add that I never wear dress shoes. I used to have high-quality gel insoles but have replaced them with the Superfeet (which IMO have added way too much internal heel height). Usually the metatarsal head that is taking the greatest weight is under excess stress during walking and the plantar plate ligament gives out over time and begins to tear. In mild cases, there may be little to no deformity to the toe that can be seen. A patient may describe the pain as a dull ache or a sharp pain the ball of the foot. It usually only involves one toe at a time, and usually involves the 2nd toe. In certain cases, back pain essentially occurs because of a poor position of the joints, from the feet up. Flat feet are therefore the main factor. Flat feet or 'over-pronation' occurs when the feet roll in so that the arches are turned closer to the ground. Back pain can be cured and prevented by correcting the movement of the knee cap, pelvis, and therefore, spine. Your podiatrist will do this by supporting the feet with a type of insole called ' orthotics ' into a normal, aligned position, and the re-alignment of upper joints in the leg, pelvis, and back will subsequently follow. CAUSES - When walking, many people have their feet rolling in (also called excessive pronation”). Peripheral Neuropathy CystGanglion Tibialis Anterior Tendonitis
